The 2023 Toyota Tundra is a full-size pickup built in Crew Cab and Extra Cab form, in trims running from the SR work truck up to the 1794 Edition, Capstone and TRD Pro. Every one of them runs a turbocharged 3.4L V6 (V35A-FTS), offered in gas and hybrid form. Cab, bed and trim together set the load carrying capacity printed on the door label, a figure that became the subject of three separate recalls in this model year alone.

Known issues on the 2023 Tundra. Ten recalls are on federal record for this model year. One covers the instrument cluster, where a software error in the combination meter's electronic control unit (ECU) is the fault on record, and a blank display will not show critical information such as the speedometer or warning lights. Another covers the automatic transmission, where unexpected vehicle movement may occur, and unexpected vehicle movement can increase the risk of a crash. A third covers fuel delivery, where the plastic fuel tube routed near metallic brake lines may chafe, and a fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source can increase the risk of a fire. Trucks equipped with a V35A engine are recalled over debris from the manufacturing process, and a loss of drive power increases the risk of a crash. The steel chain used to secure the spare tire is the subject of another, because chains that are not welded sufficiently can break and allow the spare tire to detach. A software error may also cause the rearview image not to display, and a rearview image that does not display reduces the driver's view behind the vehicle. Some trucks may be equipped with a Toyota genuine accessory tonneau cover, and a tonneau cover that detaches while driving can become a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash. The remaining three, from Toyota, from Gulf States Toyota and from Southeast Toyota Distributors, all concern the load carrying capacity modification label, two of them on trucks fitted with spray-on bed liners: an incorrect label may lead to unintentionally overloading the vehicle, and an overloaded vehicle increases the risk of a crash. Owners have filed 555 complaints against the 2023 Tundra, and Toyota has issued 177 technical service bulletins for it.
A blanked-out combination meter, fuel tube routing checked where it passes the brake lines, a spare-tire chain weld, a load capacity label that reads wrong: the work that comes up most often on a 2023 Tundra tracks its own recall record, and each job carries a torque figure and a diagnostic sequence specific to this truck and this engine rather than to the Tundra generally.
