Known issues on the 2003 Tundra. Eight recalls are on federal record for this model year, and five of them sit in the air bag system. Two name the passenger-side frontal air bag inflator module, where an inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants. Two more are recorded under air bags with no narrower component named, and both concern the inflator in the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger's frontal air bag. The fifth covers the air bag on-off switch assembly: certain pickup trucks fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 225, 'Child Restraint Anchorage Systems,' and these vehicles have a manual air bag on-off switch. Away from the air bags, a recall on the frame, members and underbody shields covers model year 2000-2003 Tundra vehicles originally sold in or currently registered in a listed group of states, where separation of the spare tire and diminished brake capacity could increase the risk of a crash. A front suspension recall covers the lower control arm ball joint, which may separate from the knuckle causing loss of steering control. The eighth is an exterior lighting recall on aftermarket combination corner and bumper lamp assemblies, where decreased lighting visibility may result in a vehicle crash. NHTSA also lists 524 owner complaints for this model year and 82 technical service bulletins.
