Known issues on the 2006 Tundra. Ten recalls are on federal record for this model year. Two involve the front suspension lower control arm ball joint. On the first, possible improper finishing of the front suspension lower ball joint means some ball joints may experience an incidental deterioration of the internal lubrication; the record flags extreme cases in which the vehicle is continuously operated in this condition. The second, filed by Tenneco Automotive (DRiV), covers certain aftermarket ball joints sold for 2004-2006 Tundra vehicles, where a ball joint failure may cause a loss of control, increasing the risk of a crash. Four cover air bags: the passenger side frontal inflator module, where an inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants; two further air bag recalls that concern the inflator in the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger's frontal air bag; and the side curtain-shield air bags, which can increase the risk of occupant injury if they deploy unexpectedly. Three concern labels. Incorrect load carrying capacity modification labels could result in the vehicle being overloaded. The other two come from regional distributors over Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 110, tire selection and rims: on the Southeast Toyota campaign a driver may overload a vehicle which may increase the risk of a crash, and on the Gulf States Toyota campaign the record states only that this does not meet the standard requirements. The tenth covers the front seat heater, whose copper strand heating element may short circuit if damaged, increasing the risk of a fire. Owners have filed 676 complaints against the 2006 Tundra, and Toyota has issued 84 technical service bulletins for it.
A lower ball joint inspection on a high-mileage truck, an air bag circuit fault or a dead heated seat all land on systems this Tundra already has history with, and the procedures and figures here are the ones Toyota published for the 2006 truck rather than a close-enough substitute from another year.
