Two very different engines were fitted to the 2004 Toyota Tundra, the 3.4L V6 (5VZ-FE) and the 4.7L V8 (2UZ-FE), and this factory service and repair manual is matched to the exact year, engine and trim in front of you, so each clearance and torque figure it lists is the one Toyota published for that truck and not a number approximated from a nearby year's book.

Known issues on the 2004 Tundra. Ten recalls are on federal record for this model year, and the front suspension lower ball joint accounts for three of them. Possible improper finishing of that joint left some of them with an incidental deterioration of the internal lubrication, called out for extreme cases in which the vehicle is continuously operated in this condition. A second ball joint recall covers a manufacturing issue in which the surface of the ball may have been scratched, where the lower ball joint may separate from the knuckle causing loss of steering control. The third, from Tenneco Automotive (DRiV), covers aftermarket MOOG and NAPA replacement ball joints listed for 2004-2006 Tundra vehicles, where a ball joint failure may cause a loss of control, increasing the risk of a crash. Five entries concern the air bags: two cover the passenger-side frontal inflator module, where an inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants; two more concern the passenger's frontal air bag inflator in the event of a crash necessitating deployment; and one covers the manual air bag on-off switch assembly on pickup trucks that fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 225, child restraint anchorage systems. On pickups equipped with both vehicle stability control and the TRD dual exhaust system, the exhaust pipe flange may rub against the right rear brake line; the same dual exhaust met all clearance specifications on models without VSC. The last recall covers 42,540 aftermarket combination corner and bumper lamp assemblies sold for various passenger vehicles, where decreased lighting visibility may result in a vehicle crash. Owners have filed 652 complaints against the 2004 Tundra, and 92 technical service bulletins have been issued for it.
Whether the job is a front lower ball joint inspection, an air bag inflator concern or a brake line routed too close to the exhaust, it holds you to the Toyota procedure and the figure that belongs to your 2004 Tundra.
