This factory service and repair manual for the 2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo lists three engines for one two-door coupe body, and two of them share a displacement: a 3.8L V6 of 231 cubic inches in naturally aspirated form and the same 3.8L supercharged, alongside a 3.4L V6 of 207 cubic inches. All three are overhead-valve gasoline engines, and the cars were sold as LS or SS. The supercharged version brings belt routing, charge air handling and torque figures of its own, which is why displacement alone will not identify the right specification here.

Known issues on the 2004 Monte Carlo. Seven recalls are on the federal record. One is a torque problem with real consequences: front brake caliper bolts tightened below specification can lose clamp load, back out or fracture, and the affected wheel can lock under braking with an abrupt steering pull toward it. Two others describe engine oil leaking onto the hot exhaust manifold, where it can ignite. Another covers an ignition switch that can slip out of the run position and leave the air bags inactive. Complaints reach 230 and are dominated by the electrical system at 143, with steering and engine at 16 each.
