This factory service and repair manual for the 2002 Chevrolet Monte Carlo has four trims to keep track of on one two-door coupe body: LS, SS, the SS 35th Anniversary Edition and the SS Dale Earnhardt Signature Edition. Mechanically the range narrows to two overhead-valve V6s, the 3.8L of 231 cubic inches and the 3.4L of 207 cubic inches, both naturally aspirated on gasoline. Known issues on the 2002 Monte Carlo. Seven recalls appear on the federal record for this year. One covers a driver air bag inflator that can fracture at a weld as it fires, sending pieces toward the occupants while the cushion fails to inflate fully. Another concerns an ignition switch that can leave the key out of the run position and the air bags unable to deploy. A third describes engine oil reaching the hot exhaust manifold and igniting there. Owners have logged 245 complaints, with the electrical system at 50 and engine cooling and exterior lighting at 28 apiece.
