This factory service and repair manual for the 1996 Chevrolet Monte Carlo deals with one coupe body, two trims and two very different V6 engines. LS and Z34 cars share the two-door shell; under the hood sits either the 3.1L pushrod V6 of 189 cubic inches or the 3.4L twin-cam V6 of 207 cubic inches. Camshaft drive, cylinder head and induction work diverge sharply between them, so those procedures are given engine by engine, while the chassis, brake and body electrical sections are written once for the whole model.

Known issues on the 1996 Monte Carlo. Three recalls are recorded for this year, and two of them are about stopping. In one, a brake booster was assembled with a mounting tab that did not seat properly in the dash reinforcement, which matters most where stopping distances are already short. In another, wet-road braking is weaker than a driver expects and can feel momentarily delayed under light or moderate pedal pressure. The third concerns replacement fuel pressure regulators built without an O-ring and retainer, so fuel can leak and ignite. Of 206 complaints, 52 name the service brakes, ahead of the electrical system at 37.
