Known issues on the 1997 Monte Carlo. The federal record holds three recalls for this year. The one felt most directly through the wheel involves a power rack and pinion whose lower pinion bearing retainer tabs were not crimped properly; the retainer can fail, the ball bearings can escape, and the pinion shaft then rides up during left turns and back down again until the wheel takes noticeably more effort to move. A second covers wet-weather braking that arrives later than expected, and a third replacement fuel pressure regulators missing a seal. Steering draws 30 of the 178 complaints, behind service brakes at 37.
