This factory service and repair manual for the 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix covers a car built around the 3.8L V6. That engine appears twice in the lineup, once breathing naturally and once with a supercharger, while a 3.1L V6 completes the list; the three use overhead valves and gasoline. Three trims, GT, GTP and SE, span the 4-door sedan and 2-door coupe. Specifications, torque values and wiring diagrams support engine, fuel, cooling, transmission, brake, suspension, steering and electrical work.

Known issues on the 1998 Grand Prix. Engine oil meeting exhaust heat runs through most of the 4 recalls on the 1998 Grand Prix. On certain 1998 Grand Prix vehicles, a hot-running front rocker cover gasket on the supercharged 3.8L could seep oil, and the naturally aspirated 3.8L could drop oil onto the exhaust manifold in hard stops; either way it could ignite. Certain 1998 Grand Prix vehicles from a specific assembly window had poorly crimped retainer tabs on the power steering gear's lower pinion bearing, which could let the bearing balls escape and make steering heavy. Of 498 complaints, 90 involve engine and cooling; 60 reported a fire, 19 a crash, 16 an injury and 1 a death. Engine and steering procedures apply.
