1996 Pontiac Grand Prix Service and Repair Manual

This factory service and repair manual for the 1996 Pontiac Grand Prix lists four trims, Base, GT, GTP and SE, on a 4-door sedan and a 2-door coupe. Known issues on the 1996 Grand Prix. The federal record lists 1 recall for the 1996 Grand Prix, in the power steering gear. On certain 1996 Grand Prix vehicles the lower pinion bearing inside the power steering rack had retainer tabs that were not properly crimped, so the bearing balls could escape. The pinion shaft could then shift, making steering heavy to the left and, at the extreme, adding unwanted assist to the right. Dealers installed a new bearing, or replaced the gear where inspection showed it was needed. Of 79 owner complaints, 16 concern the hydraulic service brakes and 8 steering; 7 reported a crash, 5 an injury and 3 a fire.
