Known issues on the 1996 Safari. Six recalls are recorded for this model year. Outboard safety belt webbing at the right rear bucket seat can separate in a crash. Integrated child seats may be missing a retractor clutch or pawl spring, so the belt locks in the retracted position or fails to lock at all. A wiper motor can stop working when solder joints on its controller board crack. Owner complaints total 168 and split almost evenly, with 30 on visibility, 28 on the suspension and 28 on the service brakes, so wiper circuits, front-end torque figures and brake hydraulics all get used.
ON CERTAIN MINIVANS, PICKUP TRUCKS, AND SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES WITH CERTAIN MODEL-ENGINE COMBINATIONS, THE WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR MAY FAIL DUE TO CRACKED SOLDER JOINTS ON THE CONTROLLER CIRCUIT BOARD.
IF THIS WERE TO OCCUR DURING BAD WEATHER, DRIVER VISIBILITY WOULD BE REDUCED, WHICH COULD RESULT IN
DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE WIPER MOTOR CIRCUIT BOARD AND COVER. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN ON JUNE 19,
