This factory service and repair manual for the 1985 GMC Safari is built around two very different gasoline engines: a 4.3L V6 of 262 cubic inches and a 2.5L inline-four of 151, both overhead-valve and naturally aspirated. The van itself reached buyers in two three-door forms, a standard cargo body and a standard passenger body, and in four trims, Base, SL, SLE and SLX. Known issues on the 1985 Safari. Three recalls sit on the federal record for this model year. One covers replacement fuel filters that seal poorly at the connection and can let gasoline escape where an ignition source is waiting. Another traces seat back failure to foam and vinyl trapped in the recliner joint, which keeps the bolts below their specified torque until they loosen, fatigue and break. A third concerns a steering gear housing that can fracture where it bolts to the frame, taking steering control with it. Three owner complaints are recorded, one each on the engine and cooling system, the seats and the steering.
