Known issues on the 2018 Malibu. Six recalls cover this year. Rear brake caliper pistons with insufficient coating can form gas pockets and give up rear braking performance. A software error in the engine control module can shut off the fuel injectors, so the engine will not start or may stall in traffic. Missing bolts on the start/stop accumulator endcap can let transmission oil escape and progress to a loss of propulsion, and the high pressure fuel pump can detach and damage its line. Of 695 complaints, 160 name the power train, 124 the electrical system and 88 the engine.
