Known issues on the 2009 Malibu. Six recalls are recorded for this year. Electric power steering assist can be lost at any time while driving. Shift cable end tabs can fracture, so the lever no longer reports the gear the transmission is in, and a separate defect can leave the car unable to restart and free to roll away after the driver steps out. The heating and ventilation system can go inoperative and stop clearing a fogged windshield. Steering leads the 1,509 complaints at 768, followed by 250 on the electrical system and 98 on the power train.
