Known issues on the 2003 Civic. Twenty-four recalls are on federal record for this model year. The largest cluster covers Takata driver- and passenger-side frontal air bag inflators, which can rupture on deployment and throw sharp metal fragments at occupants, causing serious injury or death; a related recall addresses a front passenger air bag that may have been installed incorrectly during replacement, causing it to deploy improperly. A separate recall covers the ignition switch interlock lever, which can deform and allow the key to be removed before the automatic transmission is shifted into Park, letting the vehicle roll away. The CNG-equipped Civic carries its own recall for the compressed natural gas tank, where uneven heating in a severe interior fire can prevent the pressure relief device from venting and risk a tank rupture or explosion. A separate factory recall covers the headlight switch wiring harness, where melted terminal ends can knock out the low-beam headlights and reduce driver visibility. One recall also covers replacement tempered glass from a glass supplier that fails to break into small pieces as intended, risking injury from shattered glass in a crash. The remaining twelve recalls are aftermarket exterior lighting — replacement headlamp and combination lamp assemblies sold for this Civic that lack the required amber side reflectors, reducing visibility to other drivers.
