Known issues on the 1998 Civic. Eighteen recalls are on federal record for this model year. The driver's frontal air bag inflator module can absorb moisture and rupture on deployment, sending metal fragments into the cabin or under-inflating the cushion. The front passenger air bag was flagged separately for a cloth flap tucked in too far during assembly, which can prevent proper deployment in a crash. The ignition switch's electrical contacts can degrade under high current and cause the engine to stall without warning, and on CNG-equipped cars the fuel tank's pressure relief device may fail to vent evenly in a severe rear-seat fire, risking a tank rupture. A driver-side accessory floor mat was recalled for interfering with the accelerator pedal's return to idle. The remaining thirteen recalls cover aftermarket replacement headlamp and combination lamp assemblies sold by various manufacturers for this Civic that omit the required amber side reflectors, reducing visibility to other drivers and failing FMVSS No. 108.
