Known issues on the 1997 Civic. Sixteen recalls are on federal record for this model year. Two cover the front air bag system: one involves driver-side inflators that can absorb moisture and rupture, sending metal fragments toward occupants in a crash, and the other involves front passenger air bag modules where the cloth flap covering the folded bag was tucked in too far, which can prevent proper deployment. A separate recall covers accessory driver-side floor mats that could interfere with the accelerator pedal and keep it from returning to idle. The remaining thirteen recalls cover aftermarket replacement headlamp and combination lamp assemblies sold for use on this Civic and other vehicles that were missing the required amber side reflectors, reducing visibility to other drivers.
