Known issues on the 1997 Regal. Across its run, the 1997 Regal drew seven recall campaigns. On certain cars with the naturally aspirated 3.8L V6, oil could drip onto a hot exhaust manifold under hard braking and catch fire; a new front valve cover and gasket were fitted. On certain cars with the supercharged V6, the front rocker cover gasket runs hotter, so it could wear early and seep oil onto the manifold, with the same fire risk. In certain cars the lower pinion bearing in the power steering gear could shed its balls, changing steering effort. Steering leads the 135 owner complaints with 37; 3 reported a crash, 19 a fire and 2 an injury. Engine and steering procedures address those systems.
