Known issues on the 1996 Regal. Federal regulators opened 3 recall campaigns against the 1996 Regal. In certain cars poorly crimped retainer tabs could let the lower pinion bearing in the power steering gear lose its balls, making left turns heavy and, at worst, adding unwanted assist to the right. On certain cars with a particular engine, a backfire on startup could crack the upper intake manifold, causing a no-start or an underhood fire; the powertrain control module was reprogrammed. A third, covering 43,213 vehicles, addressed certain cars whose left front brake line could rub a transaxle mount. Of 204 complaints, 39 involve hydraulic service brakes; 14 reported a crash, 16 a fire and 18 an injury. Steering and brake procedures address those systems.
