The 2008 Toyota Sequoia was sold with a choice of two naturally aspirated V8s, the 5.7L (3UR-FE) and the 4.7L (2UZ-FE), and which one is in the truck decides most of what a repair job involves, from the tightening figures to the service intervals. Trim matters too, since the SR5, Limited and Platinum were not all equipped the same way.

Known issues on the 2008 Sequoia. Eight recalls are on federal record for this model year. Two of them involve the hydraulic power steering assist: one covers JTEKT power steering gear assembly service parts for the 2007-2021 Tundra and 2008-2022 Sequoia, the other covers power steering gear assemblies that may have been manufactured incorrectly, and in both an oil leak may cause a sudden loss of power steering assist, increasing the risk of a crash. A third covers the accelerator pedal, which may become hard to depress or slow to return to idle. A fourth covers the power window switch: if the switch overheats, it may melt, possibly resulting in a fire. A fifth covers the tire pressure monitoring system, where failure to warn of tire deflations is a non-compliance with FMVSS 138 and could lead to tire failure. Two more, from Southeast Toyota and Gulf States Toyota, cover vehicle labels that do not comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 110, "Tire Selection and Rims"; on the Southeast vehicles a driver may overload a vehicle, which may increase the risk of a crash. The eighth covers the front seat heater, where a damaged copper strand heating element may short circuit, increasing the risk of a fire. Owners have filed 94 complaints against this model year, and Toyota has issued 86 technical service bulletins for it.
