This factory service and repair manual for the 1982 Chevrolet S10 covers the truck's first year, when two engines were offered and neither was large: a 2.8-liter overhead-valve V6 of 173 cubic inches and a 1.9-liter single-overhead-cam four of 119 cubic inches, both naturally aspirated and both burning gasoline. Two bodies were built, a two-door standard cab pickup and a cab and chassis left for an outside body builder to finish, and four trims — Base, Durango, Sport and Tahoe — set the equipment on top of them.

Known issues on the 1982 S10. Five recalls sit on the federal record. Three involve replacement lamp assemblies sold for this truck that lack the amber side reflectors, leaving the vehicle poorly seen by traffic approaching from the side. One covers insufficient lubrication between the mainshaft and first gear in the manual transmission, which can lock the rear wheels without warning. The last covers a rear brake backing plate whose wheel cylinder hole can enlarge until the cylinder turns and loses fluid, taking rear braking with it. Owner complaints number only two, so the brake, driveline and lighting procedures here carry the weight.
EXCESSIVE ENLARGEMENT OF THE WHEEL CYLINDER PILOT HOLE IN THE REAR BRAKE BACKING PLATE COULD ALLOW THE WHEEL CYLINDER TO ROTATE AND CAUSE LOSS OF BRAKE FLUID.
Remedy
ADD A PART TO PREVENT WHEEL CYLINDER FROM ROTATING.
REAR WHEELS MAY LOCK SUDDENLY DUE TO INSUFFICIENT LUBRICATION BETWEEN MAINSHAFT AND FIRST GEAR.
