This factory service and repair manual for the 1988 Chevrolet Caprice covers two bodies, the four-door sedan and the four-door wagon. Four trims were offered — Base, Classic, Classic Brougham and Classic LS Brougham — and three overhead-valve gasoline engines carried them: the 4.3-liter V6 of 262 cubic inches and the 5.0-liter and 5.7-liter V8s of 305 and 350. Known issues on the 1988 Caprice. Three recalls stand on the federal record. Two involve replacement filters: an oil filter that can seal inadequately and lose oil, and a fuel filter whose connection may leak gasoline, either one capable of feeding a fire. The third is the cruise control servo bushing that can slip out of position, producing unexpected engine speed or a throttle that catches open. Fifteen complaints were logged, three on the electrical system and two each on seat belts and speed control — systems this manual diagnoses with its own wiring and adjustment procedures.
