1986 Chevrolet Caprice Service and Repair Manual
This factory service and repair manual for the 1986 Chevrolet Caprice deals only with gasoline power: the 4.3-liter V6 of 262 cubic inches and the 5.0-liter and 5.7-liter V8s of 305 and 350 cubic inches, all overhead-valve and naturally aspirated. Sedan, wagon and coupe bodies were built, and the trim ladder ran Base, Classic and Classic Brougham. The fuel, ignition and emissions sections therefore cover one family of engines, with the differences between them measured in displacement rather than in fuel type.

Known issues on the 1986 Caprice. Three recalls stand on the record, each a fire mechanism: a replacement oil filter that fails to seal and loses engine oil, a replacement fuel filter that can leak at its connection, and a cruise control servo bushing that slips out of place and leaves engine speed rising unbidden or the throttle hung open. Owner complaints reach forty, and twenty-six of them — by far the heaviest cluster — concern the service brakes, with three each on steering and tires. Brake hydraulics, bleeding and clearance specifications deserve the closest reading here.
