Known issues on the 2021 Highlander. Two recalls sit on the federal record for this model year. The first concerns the occupant classification sensor in the air bag system and covers certain 2020-2021 Highlander and Highlander Hybrid vehicles, along with other Toyota and Lexus models; an air bag that does not deploy during a crash increases the risk of injury. The second comes from Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET), which is recalling certain 2021-2024 Highlander vehicles over 20-inch accessory tires with an insufficient load rating for the vehicle's Gross Axle Weight Rating. Tires with an insufficient load rating can be overloaded and fail, increasing the risk of a crash. Owners have logged 555 complaints against the 2021 Highlander, and 179 technical service bulletins have been issued for it.
