Known issues on the 2001 Highlander. Two recalls stand on the federal record for this model year. The first is a door latch recall: these sport utility vehicles have a child protection lock (CPL) system on both of the rear side doors, and the recall describes an operator closing the door very hard with the CPL lever set to lock. That condition could allow the door to be opened. The second is a brake master cylinder recall: the reservoir filler cap of the brake master cylinder may induce a vacuum, introducing some air into the brake master cylinder reservoir, and the increased pedal stroke will lengthen the stopping distance of the vehicle. Owners have logged 158 complaints against this model year, and 92 technical service bulletins have been issued for it.
