Four separate campaigns cover the passenger frontal air bag inflator: on three of them, propellant degradation after long-term exposure to high humidity and temperature can cause the inflator to explode, sending sharp metal fragments toward the driver or other occupants and risking serious injury or death, and on the fourth an inflator installed incorrectly during replacement may not properly deploy the passenger frontal air bag in a crash, increasing the risk of injury. A fifth recall covers the driver's air bag module, where one or more missing rivets could alter how the air bag performs during deployment. The sixth covers the engine: insufficient heat treatment during piston manufacturing left some pistons prone to premature wear, and a worn piston may suddenly fail, causing the engine to stall and increasing the risk of a crash.
