Known issues on the 2009 Outback. The 2009 Outback carries 13 recalls, most of those shown involving the passenger frontal air bag. On certain 2009 Outback vehicles sold or registered in named states, the inflator's propellant can break down with long exposure to humidity and temperature cycling and explode when the bag deploys, sending sharp metal toward occupants; dealers replace the inflator. Certain cars fitted with a replacement mechanical-key ignition switch were also recalled over a spring that can break and let the engine switch off. Of 106 owner complaints, 30 cite air bags and 23 the electrical system; 1 complaint reported a crash, 3 a fire and 2 an injury.
