Known issues on the 2004 Sentra. Five recalls are on federal record for this model year. Three of them concern the passenger frontal air bag inflator: Takata units built with phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate propellant can degrade after long-term exposure to heat and humidity and rupture on deployment, throwing metal fragments at occupants, with one of those three specifically covering vehicles whose inflators were inspected but never actually replaced. A fourth extends the same inflator risk to driver and passenger-side replacement parts installed after a theft or collision repair. The fifth covers the 2.5L engine's crank angle sensor, which is sensitive to temperature swings and can produce a signal interruption brief enough to escape the ECM's fault logic, stalling the engine at low speed without warning. Owners have filed 197 complaints for the year and no technical service bulletins are logged. The factory diagnostic and repair procedures behind each of those systems are here.
From a passenger air bag inspection to chasing an intermittent stall tied to the crank angle sensor, it keeps you on the OEM procedure and the correct specification for your specific 2004 Sentra.
