Known issues on the 1998 A6 Quattro. Ten recalls are on federal record for this model year. Non-Azide driver air bag inflators can absorb moisture and deploy improperly in a crash. A short circuit in the headlight switch connector on halogen low-beam models could lead to overheating or fire, and a separate knee-bolster contact issue could let a fire originate in the left dashboard area. Sulfur deposits on the fuel sending units can cause the fuel gauge to read full when the tank is not, risking an unexpected run-out. Tie rod seals can let in moisture and dust, wearing the swivel bearing and diminishing steering control. A vacuum hose control valve can fail to open or close fully below -4°F, reducing vacuum to the brake booster. On automatic-transmission cars with the 2.8L V6, ice can accumulate in the throttle body and freeze the throttle open, risking a loss of vehicle control and a crash without warning. A mismatched fuel filler neck and cap, and separately a fuel vapor back-pressure issue during refueling on Quattro-equipped cars, both raise the risk of fuel escaping near an ignition source. And a loose air screen in the air flow meter can shed pieces into the intake and prevent the throttle plate from returning to idle. Owners have filed 134 complaints for the year. The factory diagnostic and repair procedures behind each of those systems are here.

Whether you're chasing an intermittent throttle issue, inspecting the tie rod seals, or working through a fuel system check, it keeps you on the OEM procedure and the correct specification for your specific 1998 A6 Quattro.
