Known issues on the 1997 Altima. Three recalls are on federal record for this model year, all tied to aftermarket replacement parts rather than original factory equipment. The first covers front strut mounts sold as replacement equipment that were missing a required weld between the bearing housing and rate plate, letting the strut come out of its mounting position under extreme driving and increasing crash risk. The second covers replacement corner lamps, turn signals, and headlights sold without amber side reflectors, which can leave the vehicle poorly illuminated. The third covers replacement seat belt buckle assemblies with an improperly heat-treated buckle base, which can fail to restrain an occupant in a collision. Owners have filed 117 complaints for the year, and no technical service bulletins are logged. The factory diagnostic and repair procedures behind each of those systems are here.
Whether you're inspecting front suspension, verifying lighting and restraint hardware, or working through a routine service interval, it keeps you on the OEM procedure and correct specification for your specific 1997 Altima.

CERTAIN BUCKLE ASSEMBLIES WERE PRODUCED WITH A "BUCKLE BASE" THAT WAS IMPROPERLY HEAT TREATED. THIS CAN CAUSE THE "BUCKLE BASE" TO BE BRITTLE FAILING TO COMPLY TO FMVSS NO. 209, "SEAT BELT ASSEMBLIES."
IN THE EVENT OF A COLLISION, THESE SEAT BELTS MAY NOT RESTRAIN AN OCCUPANT INCREASING THE RISK OF INJURY.
DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE BUCKLE ASSEMBLIES AND REPLACE THEM IF NECESSARY.
