Two are 1.8-liter gasoline engines that differ in valvetrain, one with double overhead cams and one with a single cam, and neither is turbocharged. The other two are 1.6-liter (97 cu in) diesels, one naturally aspirated and one turbocharged. Bodies were a two-door and a four-door sedan.

Known issues on the 1989 Jetta. Four recalls stand against the 1989 Jetta. One reached certain 1989 Jetta vehicles whose fuel rail hose could shrink until the clamps no longer sealed it, letting fuel seep in the engine bay where it could catch fire; a new hose and self-tightening clamp were installed. Another involved certain cars with Digifant engine management, in which a preheating tube that might lack proper support could wear through the right front brake line. Seat belts lead the 28 owner complaints at 9, followed by visibility at 6; one complaint reported a crash and 2 reported a fire. Fuel system and brake hydraulic specifications and diagnostics in this manual apply to both.
