This factory service and repair manual for the 1988 Chevrolet Blazer sets a 5.7-liter 350-cubic-inch gasoline V8 against a 6.2-liter 379-cubic-inch diesel V8, both overhead-valve and both naturally aspirated, in a two-door sport utility badged Scottsdale or Silverado. Two engines of that character share little beyond their overhead-valve V8 layout, so fuel delivery, starting, lubrication and cooling are handled on their own terms for each, while the driveline, axle, brake, frame and body sections apply to the truck as a whole.

Engines covered

  • 6.2L V8 (379 cu in) — OHV, naturally aspirated, diesel
  • 5.7L V8 (350 cu in) — OHV, naturally aspirated, gasoline

Body styles covered

  • 2-door sport utility

Trims covered

  • Scottsdale
  • Silverado

Known issues on the 1988 Blazer. Four recalls stand on the federal record. The one that belongs to the truck itself concerns brake rotors: road salt can corrode the joint between the stamped steel center and the cast outer section until the two separate, costing that wheel its braking. The other three come from replacement parts — lamps missing their amber side reflectors, a fuel filter that seals poorly and can leak, and oil filters that can seal badly and drain the engine. Of 44 complaints, seat belts lead with 12, ahead of engine and cooling at 6 and the electrical system at 4.
