The 2018 Avalon was the last year of its generation, and it came two ways under the hood: the 3.5L V6 (2GRFE) driving the front wheels, or the Avalon Hybrid, whose Atkinson-cycle 2.5L four (2AR-FXE) works alongside the electric drive. The two share a body and a cabin but very little of the engine bay — different cooling and charging arrangements, a different way of starting, and on the hybrid a high-voltage system that has to be shut down and confirmed dead before most mechanical work begins.

Known issues on the 2018 Avalon. Two recalls are on record for this model year. One covers the air bag and restraint control module: in the event of a crash, the air bags and/or seat belt pretensioners may not deploy as intended. The other covers the gasoline fuel pump — if the fuel pump fails, the engine can stall while driving, increasing the risk of a crash. Owners have registered 31 complaints for this model year, and 96 technical service bulletins have been issued for it.
Reading restraint-system codes, tracing a stall back to fuel delivery, and working through a scheduled service on the hybrid are three different jobs, and each one is done to Toyota's own torque figures, tolerances and test values for this 2018 Avalon.
