2016 Toyota Avalon Service and Repair Manual
The 2016 Toyota Avalon was sold as two different cars under one body: a hybrid built around the 2.5L four-cylinder (2AR-FXE) and a gasoline sedan powered by the 3.5L V6 (2GRFE). The trim ladder splits the same way, with three Hybrid grades sitting alongside five gasoline grades, so the correct torque figure, fluid specification and diagnostic routine for any given car depends on which of the two drivetrains is under the hood.

Known issues on the 2016 Avalon. Three recalls are on federal record for this model year, and all three sit in the restraint system. The first covers the air bag/restraint control module on 2012-2018 Avalon and 2013-2018 Avalon Hybrid vehicles: in the event of a crash, air bags and/or seat belt pretensioners may not deploy as intended. The second covers the front passenger knee air bag on cars manufactured August 3, 2016 to September 12, 2016, which may have been installed with incorrect fasteners that can become loose over time. The third covers the occupant classification system on cars manufactured November 30, 2015 to March 4, 2016, where air bags that do not deploy as intended during a crash increase the risk of injury. Owners have submitted 33 complaints for the year, and Toyota has issued 140 technical service bulletins.
Whether the job is chasing a restraint-system fault, servicing the hybrid drivetrain in one of the Hybrid grades, or working a scheduled interval on a V6 Touring, the specifications and the procedures diverge between the two Avalons, and these are the ones Toyota released for the 2016 car.
