Known issues on the 2008 Avalon. Five recalls sit on the federal record for this model year. Two of them are filed under vehicle speed control, accelerator pedal: under the first, the accelerator pedal may become hard to depress or slow to return to idle; under the second, a stuck open accelerator pedal may result in very high vehicle speeds and make it difficult to stop. Two more are labeling recalls from regional distributors, covering vehicles that fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 110, "Tire Selection and Rims." The Southeast Toyota campaign cites the consequence that a driver may overload a vehicle, which may increase the risk of a crash; the Gulf States Toyota campaign cites only that this does not meet the standard requirements. The fifth covers the front seat heater, where a damaged copper strand heating element may short circuit, increasing the risk of a fire. Owners have filed 417 complaints for the year and Toyota has issued 152 technical service bulletins.
