Known issues on the 2008 RAV4. Twelve recalls are on federal record for this model year. Three cover the rear suspension, where failure of the rear tie rod could cause a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash. One covers the accelerator pedal: a stuck open accelerator pedal may result in very high vehicle speeds and make it difficult to stop. Two cover the power window devices and controls — in one, the sliding electrical contacts are not protected by lubricant, admitting debris and moisture; in the other, if the switch overheats it may melt, possibly resulting in a fire. One covers the air bags, where inadvertent activation of the curtain shield airbag and/or the seat belt pretensioner can cause injury. One covers the rear seat belts, where a cut seat belt may not properly restrain the seat occupant. Three cover labels: incorrect load carrying capacity modification labels could result in the vehicle being overloaded, and two distributor campaigns cite Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 110, one warning that a driver may overload a vehicle which may increase the risk of a crash, the other recorded only as not meeting the standard requirements. The last covers the front seat heater, where a damaged copper strand heating element may short circuit, increasing the risk of a fire. Owners have filed 708 complaints against the 2008 RAV4, and Toyota has issued 143 technical service bulletins for it.
