This factory service and repair manual for the 2004 Ford Mustang covers five gasoline engines: two OHV V6s, a 3.8L and a 3.9L of 238 cubic inches, and three 4.6L V8s, one SOHC and naturally aspirated, one DOHC and naturally aspirated, and one DOHC and supercharged. Six trims are covered, Base, GT, GT Base, GT Equipado and SVT Cobra among them, in two-door coupe and two-door convertible bodies. Procedures, specifications, torque values, wiring diagrams and diagnostics are given for every engine, with the 3.9L V6 documented on its own rather than folded into the 3.8L.

Known issues on the 2004 Mustang. Federal records carry six recalls. The factory item is the Cobra accelerator pedal, whose rear surface could snag in the carpet cutout during hard acceleration and hold the throttle open instead of returning to idle. The rest are aftermarket parts: headlamps and combination lamps missing amber side reflectors, and a fuel filter whose quick connectors may not seat fully. Owners have taken 130 complaints to NHTSA, and vehicle speed control leads them with 34, ahead of air bags with 11 and the service brakes with nine. The manual's throttle and speed control diagnostics, air bag wiring diagrams and brake procedures cover those systems.
