This factory service and repair manual for the 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier splits its engine coverage two ways. One engine is a naturally aspirated 2.2L overhead-valve inline-four of 134 cubic inches, built either as a bi-fuel unit burning gasoline or LPG or as a straight gasoline engine; the other is a naturally aspirated 2.4L twin-cam of 146 cubic inches. Sedan, convertible and coupe bodies were built in Base, LS and Z24 trim, and the fuel, emissions and engine control sections are written to match whichever installation the car left the plant with.

Known issues on the 2000 Cavalier. Seven recalls are on the federal record. One is specific to the bi-fuel cars, whose instrument panel lamps stay at full brightness with no way to dim them, making it harder to see out at night. Another covers the ignition switch, which can melt inside under a prolonged crank and then start a fire in the column. A third involves a replacement fuel pressure regulator missing its sealing ring, so gasoline can escape. Four more are replacement lamps and a steering shaft. Owners have logged 338 complaints, 50 electrical, 50 on engine cooling and 44 on the brakes.
