The sedan, convertible, coupe and wagon were sold as Base, RS, VL and Z24, and the engine bay held one of a naturally aspirated 2.8L overhead-valve V6 of 173 cubic inches, a naturally aspirated 2.2L overhead-valve inline-four of 134 cubic inches or a naturally aspirated 3.1L overhead-valve V6 of 189 cubic inches. Each has its own tune-up figures, cooling data and torque sequences in the engine sections.

Known issues on the 1992 Cavalier. A single recall stands on the federal record, and it concerns the hood's second line of defense: the secondary latch spring was installed wrong or left out, so the secondary latch never catches its striker. If the primary latch is also unlatched, the hood can lift at speed and come back against the windshield, taking away the driver's forward view. Complaints total 161, and 54 of them are on the service brakes, ahead of 21 electrical and 13 on engine cooling. Latch adjustment, brake hydraulic overhaul and circuit diagnosis are all specified in this manual.
