Known issues on the 1999 Cavalier. Eight recalls sit on the federal record. One covers instrument panel backlighting that can go dark after the interior light intensity is adjusted, leaving the driver without lit controls and displays at night. Another concerns the ignition switch, which can melt internally when the key is held at start and later ignite in the steering column. A third involves a replacement fuel pressure regulator assembled without its sealing ring and retainer, which can let gasoline out. The rest are replacement lamp assemblies and a steering shaft.
