This factory service and repair manual for the 1999 Chevrolet Cavalier has one detail that sets its engine chapter apart: the 2.2L overhead-valve inline-four of 134 cubic inches could be built as a bi-fuel unit running gasoline or LPG as well as on gasoline alone, which brings a second fuel system into the book. The other engine is a naturally aspirated 2.4L twin-cam of 146 cubic inches. Sedan, convertible and coupe bodies were sold as Base, LS, RS and Z24, sharing chassis, brake and body electrical procedures.

Known issues on the 1999 Cavalier. Eight recalls sit on the federal record. One covers instrument panel backlighting that can go dark after the interior light intensity is adjusted, leaving the driver without lit controls and displays at night. Another concerns the ignition switch, which can melt internally when the key is held at start and later ignite in the steering column. A third involves a replacement fuel pressure regulator assembled without its sealing ring and retainer, which can let gasoline out. The rest are replacement lamp assemblies and a steering shaft. Complaints reach 268, led by 53 on the service brakes and 41 on engine cooling.
