Known issues on the 1997 Accord. Fifteen recalls are on federal record for this model year. Twelve of them cover aftermarket replacement headlamp and combination lamp assemblies from a dozen different suppliers, none equipped with the amber side reflex reflector required under Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108, which can reduce lighting visibility to other drivers and lead to a crash. Honda's own three recalls cover the ignition switch, where electrical contacts can degrade under the high current passing through it and worn contacts can cause the engine to stall without warning; the front lower control arm ball joints, which can prematurely wear out and, in the worst case, separate and collapse the front suspension while reducing steering control; and the underhood air conditioner wire harness, which was improperly routed so wires rub against each other and can short-circuit, overheating and smoking and, in the worst case, starting a fire in the engine compartment. Owners have filed 484 complaints for the year, and Honda has issued no technical service bulletins.
