The 1991 Toyota 4Runner left the factory with one of two engines, and which one is under the hood changes almost every number you work to: the 2.4L four-cylinder (22RE) or the 3.0L V6 (3VZ-E). Valve clearances, torque values and service intervals differ between them, and the 1991 model year carries its own figures rather than ones borrowed from the years on either side of it.

Known issues on the 1991 4Runner. One recall is on federal record for this model year, and it covers the steering linkage relay rod. On certain pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles, if the steering wheel is repeatedly turned under certain conditions where high steering effort and power assist are required, and the vehicle continues to be operated in that condition, the relay rod may fracture. Owners have filed 55 complaints against the 1991 4Runner, and 13 technical service bulletins have been issued for it.
The two engines share a SOHC, naturally aspirated layout and little else in their service data, so the first thing to settle before any job on this truck is which one it was built with. On the front end, the steering relay rod and its connecting joints are worth a close look any time the linkage is disturbed on a truck of this age.
