Toyota sold the 2005 4Runner as a body-on-frame SUV with two quite different powerplants: the 4.0L V6 (1GR-FE) and the 4.7L V8 (2UZ-FE). Output, fluid capacities and service intervals differ between the two, so a figure quoted for the V6 is genuinely the V6 figure and the V8 carries its own values, with nothing borrowed from the engine next to it or from an adjacent 4Runner model year.

Known issues on the 2005 4Runner. Five recalls are on federal record for this model year. One covers the accelerator pedal, which can stick open: a stuck open accelerator pedal may result in very high vehicle speeds and make it difficult to stop. A second covers the side curtain-shield air bags, which can deploy unexpectedly, increasing the risk of occupant injury. A third covers the front seat heater assembly, where a damaged copper strand heating element may short circuit, increasing the risk of a fire. The remaining two are labeling recalls against Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 110, "Tire Selection and Rims": on one the label does not meet the standard requirements, and on the other a driver may overload a vehicle, which may increase the risk of a crash. Owners have filed 553 complaints against the 2005 4Runner and Toyota has issued 88 technical service bulletins covering it.
