The 2009 Toyota 4Runner left the factory with one of two engines — the 4.0L V6 (1GR-FE) or the 4.7L V8 (2UZ-FE) — and in SR5, Sport or Limited trim. Torque values, clearances and the order of the steps change with that combination, so the figures you work to are the ones Toyota published for the 2009 model year rather than ones carried over from an adjacent year.

Known issues on the 2009 4Runner. Five recalls sit on the federal record for this model year. One covers the accelerator pedal under vehicle speed control: a stuck open accelerator pedal may result in very high vehicle speeds and make it difficult to stop. A second, from Southeast Toyota Distributors, covers the frontal air bag sensor and control module, where the front passenger seat occupant sensing system is out of calibration. Two more are labeling recalls against Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 110, "Tire Selection and Rims" — one from Southeast Toyota, where a driver may overload a vehicle, which may increase the risk of a crash, and one from Gulf States Toyota, whose labeling does not meet the standard requirements. The fifth covers the front seat heater: if damaged, the copper strand heating element may short circuit, increasing the risk of a fire. There are also 33 owner complaints on record for this model year and 130 technical service bulletins.
