Known issues on the 2012 4Runner. Six recalls sit on the federal record for this model year. Two of them cover the frontal passenger-side air bag inflator module: in one, an inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants; in the other, an inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants. A third air bag recall is filed against the frontal sensor/control module, where the front passenger seat occupant sensing system is out of calibration. A fourth covers trucks fitted with non-original-equipment remote engine starters, where a malfunction in the Audiovox brand remote starter means antilock braking and stability control may be lost. A fifth, an exhaust system recall from Southeast Toyota Distributors covering 2010-2015 4Runners, warns that contact with an exhaust tip may result in personal injury. The sixth covers accessory hood scoops installed by Southeast Toyota Distributors or its dealers: if the hood scoop detaches, it may become a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash. Owners have filed 112 complaints against this model year, and 175 technical service bulletins are on file for it.
