The 1990 Toyota 4Runner is a body-on-frame utility built on Toyota's compact truck platform, and for this model year the choice was between the 2.4L four-cylinder (22RE) and the 3.0L V6 (3VZ-E). The two are different enough in valvetrain, ignition and cooling that a torque value or clearance taken from one will not carry over to the other, so the first step on any job is confirming which engine and which trim you are working on.

Known issues on the 1990 4Runner. One recall stands on the federal record for this model year, and it concerns the steering linkage relay rod. It covers certain pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles: if the steering wheel is repeatedly turned under conditions where high steering effort and power assist are required, and the vehicle continues to be operated in that condition, the relay rod may fracture. Owners of this model year have filed 95 complaints with NHTSA, and 13 technical service bulletins have been issued for it.
On a truck this age the steering linkage is worth a look regardless of the recall: the relay rod, idler arm and tie rod ends wear as a set, and a fracture at the relay rod is what the campaign above was written to prevent. The specifications here are Toyota's own for the 1990 4Runner, tied to the engine and trim you own.
