Toyota sold the 2005 Tacoma with two engines, a 2.7L four-cylinder (2TR-FE) and a 4.0L V6 (1GR-FE), spread across Base, PreRunner and X-Runner trims in two-door, four-door and Extra Cab bodies. Which of those combinations is sitting in front of you changes the specification you work to, and this service and repair manual is written for the 2005 model year rather than a span of years, so the numbers match the truck you actually have.

Known issues on the 2005 Tacoma. Eight recalls are on federal record for this model year. Two of them involve the air bags. On certain regular cab pickup trucks equipped with a bench seat, a wire harness manufacturing process error left the seat position and seat belt buckle sensor connector pins incorrectly positioned, and in that condition the seat position and seat belt buckle sensor may not function as designed. The second is a frontal air bag recall, covering trucks on which steering wheel vibration may over time damage the spiral cable assembly, so that in the event of a crash the driver's side air bag may not deploy. A seat belt recall applies to Tacoma Access Cab vehicles on which the seat belt pre-tensioner may detach from the seat belt assembly. A parking brake recall covers pickup trucks equipped with an automatic transmission on which the parking brake pedal cable lock nut may not have been tightened to the proper torque specification, a condition that could allow the vehicle to roll if the transmission is not placed into Park. Another covers the accelerator pedal, which can get stuck in the wide open position; a stuck open accelerator pedal may result in very high vehicle speeds and make it difficult to stop. The remaining three are label recalls: one for vehicles that were not equipped with load carrying capacity modification labels, where incorrect load carrying capacity modification labels could result in the vehicle being overloaded; one from Southeast Toyota for failing to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 110, which covers tire selection and rims, where a driver may overload a vehicle which may increase the risk of a crash; and one from Gulf States Toyota, also for failing to comply with the requirements of Standard No. 110. Owners have filed 870 complaints against the 2005 Tacoma, and Toyota has issued 136 technical service bulletins for it.
Whether you are diagnosing a spiral cable assembly fault, re-torquing a parking brake pedal cable lock nut, or working on an Access Cab seat belt pre-tensioner, this manual keeps you on Toyota's own procedure and on the correct figure for your specific 2005 Tacoma.
