Fitment here is narrow on purpose: this factory service and repair manual is tied to the 2001 Toyota Tacoma specifically, down to the engine and cab your truck left the line with, whether that is the 2.4L (2RZ-FE), the 2.7L (3RZ-FE) or the 3.4L V6 (5VZ-FE). Every clearance and tightening sequence in it is what Toyota published for the 2001 truck, not a number pulled from an adjacent year of the same pickup.

Known issues on the 2001 Tacoma. Two recalls are on federal record for this model year. The first covers the gasoline fuel delivery hoses, lines and fittings: on certain pickup trucks, during a side impact NCAP test, a flange at the rear end of the double cab body deformed and interfered with the fuel inlet hose. That damage could result in fuel leakage, which could result in a fire. The second covers the front suspension lower control arm ball joint, where a manufacturing issue means the surface of the ball of the joint may have been scratched; the lower ball joint may separate from the knuckle, causing loss of steering control. Owners have filed 504 complaints against the 2001 Tacoma, and Toyota has issued 74 technical service bulletins for it.
On a truck this age the jobs are rarely exotic: a weeping fuel line, a ball joint with play in it, a suspension fastener that has to go back to a specific torque. Getting them right comes down to working to Toyota's own figures for the 2001 Tacoma rather than a generic specification.
Toyota is recalling certain model year 2001 through 2004 Tacoma light trucks manufactured from August 28, 2000, through August 27, 2004, and originall
