The 2005 Toyota Prius is the hybrid hatchback Toyota sold that year in a single Base trim, built around a 1.5L four-cylinder (1NZ-FXE) working with its electric drive motor. The specifications and procedures here are the ones Toyota published for this model year and this powertrain, not values carried across from an adjacent year.

Known issues on the 2005 Prius. Two recalls are on federal record for this model year. The first is a vehicle speed control fault at the accelerator pedal: the pedal can get stuck in the wide open position, and a stuck open accelerator pedal may result in very high vehicle speeds and make it difficult to stop. The second, filed by Southeast Toyota, is a labeling defect — the vehicles failed to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 110, "Tire Selection and Rims" — and a driver may overload a vehicle, which may increase the risk of a crash. Owners have filed 1,298 complaints against the 2005 Prius, and Toyota has issued 123 technical service bulletins for it.
That history is worth reading before diagnosis starts. A pedal that hangs open on a 2005 Prius, or a question about what load the tires and rims on the car are actually rated to carry, may already have a documented cause and a Toyota-specified remedy behind it.
