The 2001 Toyota Prius left the factory with a single drivetrain and a single trim: a 1.5L naturally aspirated four (1NZ-FXE) working as part of the hybrid system, in Base trim. It is not a conventional Toyota to service — the gasoline engine stops and restarts on its own, and a high-voltage traction battery and its cabling sit behind the ordinary mechanical work — so the specifications you work to are the ones Toyota set for this model year, not numbers carried across from an adjacent year of the car.

Known issues on the 2001 Prius. One recall stands on federal record for this model year, against the electric power assist steering system. It reaches 2001 through 2003 Prius passenger cars manufactured from January 28, 2000, through May 30, 2003, and the defect recorded is that the steering linkage may loosen; the consequence on record is a loss of power steering, particularly when an operator is actively intending to steer the vehicle. NHTSA lists 215 owner complaints against the 2001 Prius, and Toyota has issued 99 technical service bulletins for it.
Whether the job in front of you is that steering linkage, a hybrid powertrain diagnosis or a scheduled service interval, this manual keeps you on Toyota's own procedure and the correct specification for the 2001 Prius.
